We call on the Kuala Lumpur City Hall to improve the efficiency of implementing road projects and traffic management to ensure better flow of traffic in the city. Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong after inspecting traffic in Kepong. 28.1.2002.   | |||||||
| The objective is to make Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian commercial capital, a world-class garden city of light. Although we still have a long way to go. We try. The Federal Government and Kuala Lumpur City Hall, KLCH, have allocated funds for road projects in the city. However, because of various factors including the rapid increase in the number of vehicles and the speed with which projects can be completed, we continue to face traffic woes. In the last two years, the Government allocates about RM370 million to upgrade the road and traffic system in KL. For example, in 2001, it gave RM160.8 million for 24 road projects including ring road. What bother city folks are the slow completion of projects and the relative lack of consideration of road-users. For instance, the inner ring road project at 8th mile Kepong is now nearly two years, affecting people |
in Desa Jaya, Kepong Town, Kepong Garden, Bukit Maluri, Menjalara, Sri Damansara and Sungai Buloh. SIMULTANEOUS We hope that the inner ring road project will be completed in May this year as scheduled. The developer, Bumihiway, does not seem to construct the road stage by stage. Instead it starts work at various stages simultaneously. Could this be a factor in the undue congestion of the traffic? Why does a contractor work at many stages simultaneously? Is it because the Government pays the contractor according to the work done on the number of stages? If multi-staged construction means quicker money for the contractor, it may mean more traffic jams for the people. We hope that KLCH and the Federal Government will improve the efficiency of project implementation and introduce better management of the traffic around construction sites. Dr Tan Seng Giaw | ||||||
