| The Malaysian commercial capital, Kuala Lumpur, has a new mayor, Datuk Bandar, since 14 December, 2001. He has promised to continue with the various projects to make KL the international garden city of light. Aiming to be a world-class city is reasonable. We must strive towards it as we have a long way to go. Welcoming the new Datuk Bandar, we notice that he emphasizes that the City Hall is an organization in direct relationship with the people and that it must be based on the needs of city folks, adapting to the situation We hope that after he has oriented himself and understood his work and Every year, KL City Hall has a budget of over RM1 billion, keeping over | various services and recreational facilities. It regulates health, food hygiene, hawkers, restaurants and shops. CONTACT WITH PEOPLE If Datuk Mohamad Shaid keeps in touch with city folks, then he will find out that many things need to be improved. For example, they are concerned with the efficiency of his enforcement officers and irregularities such as corruption. Lack of efficiency, bureaucracy and heavy fines are among factors that spawn irregularities. We have seen changes in the appearance and roads of KL. However, we hope that the Datuk Bandar will spend some time in reviewing the procedures for the application for licenses and permits, the types of irregularities and the extra expenses such as under-the-table payment of the people. We look forward to KL becoming a world-class garden city.
