| Malaysian Airlines system, MAS, is our national crrier. We should be proud of it. However, it should be managed properly. If it is managed efficiently, external factors such as rising fuel cost may not affect it so badly. MAS is in trouble because of factors including regional economic crisis, petroleum price increase, mismanagement and burden of domestic flights. That the Malaysian Government has bought 29.09% MAS shares from Tan Sri Tajuddin at RM 8 per share instead of the market price of over RM 3 causes controversy. Now the Prime Minister has been reported as saying that Tan Sri Azizan's appointment as MAS's chairman is ideal and that it is not permanent. Datuk Md Nor is the managing director. The people are speculating on the Government's intention and effect. They yearn to know more of the share purchase, the board appointment and the solution to the burden of domestic routes. VIABLE NEW TECHNOLOGY After the storm and the reshuffle, will we see competitive MAS services? Will it update | its technology? Although the Government prattles about MAS winning international awards, we would like to see the company improve its services and cut down wanton waste. Can it reduce the wastage in its contracts? Does it plan to provide viable new technology such as reliable Internet service during flights? We understand that a new technology may be expensive and may not be cost effective. The new MAS management will have to identify the types of new technology it intends to have. True, a company such as Cathay Pacific that is based in Hong Kong is not burdened by domestic flights. Nevertheless, it is constantly coming out with innovations. It is installing Internet in all its flights to cater for the need of passengers for e-commerce and k-economy by the middle of this year. Will Internet facility be an answer? MAS may be studying such type of Internet facility or the latest satellite link-up. Will this improve its image? We hope that it will take on wings of change for the better. Dr Tan Seng Giaw | Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the report that the Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad regarded the appointment of Tan Sri Azizan as non-executive chairman of MAS as an ideal selection. | |||||
