DAP will be having a National Unity Forum on 9 February, 2001.
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on 31.1.2001.

Malaysian media are full of news on unity. Why is it so?

To answer this question, DAP will be having a National Unity Forum on 9 February, 2001, from 8.30 PM at the Chinese Assembly Hall, Jalan Maharajalela, Kuala Lumpur.

Unity means different things to different people. Since the 1999 general elections and especially the Lunas by-election, UMNO keeps harking back to the last century when it could evoke primordial response by playing on Malay unity and rights. UMNO wants talks on Malay unity.

The advent of the 21st century witnesses a sea change in the nature of political party and the perception of Malaysians towards party politics. This perception varies between rural and urban areas.

Sdr Lim Kit Siang, Sdr Mustapha Ali, Sdr Chandra Muzaffa and Sdr Syed

Husin Ali will be panelists. It will be interesting to listen to their views on National unity and Malay unity.

Meanwhile, we see political, economic, educational and other issues that give rise to disaffection. The handling of the rights of peaceful assembly, reform of corporate management such as MAS and the building of schools of various streams causes concern., For example, the turning of oil royalty for the Terengganu state to benevolent (ihsan) money and the reluctance of the Education Ministry to build more Chinese and Tamil schools foster discontent.

One of the bases of National Unity is tolerance. Consistent and just policies beget tolerance. Are the Barisan Nasional policies conducive to National Unity?

Welcome to the National Unity Forum.

Dr Tan Seng Giaw
