| Last month, we saw the Ops Statik V, Static Operation, during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Malaysia. Today, on the eve of the Chinese New Year, Traffic Police has launched Ops Statik VI for two weeks, stationing 4,700 policemen in 70 accident-prone areas. We hope that this campaign can reduce road toll. According to the police, during the Ops Statik V, there were 10,900 Apparently, 40% of 187 deaths were associated with drivers who received notices or warrants. This shows that people who are involved in road traffic accidents tend to flout the law. DRIVER BEHAVIOUR Besides Ops Statik, the Government resorts to shock advertising campaigns on television, showing spine-chilling scenes of fatal accidents in the last | few years. How effective are these? After watching them, do drivers change their behaviour? Actually, there are many reasons for road accidents. Previously, occasional ones were invisible. Let us hope that none will bully the public. Do drivers become more cautious on seeing a stationary policeman? Thus, can we reduce road toll? The Government should review the effectiveness of the shock advertisements and static operations on the behaviour of drivers and the incidence of road accidents. Malaysia builds more roads and has more cars. We expect to see more road accidents and toll. Let us try to reduce these.
