Seminar on economic crisis and recovery--foreign exchange controls
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the economic seminar, Economic Crisis and Recovery. 8 October 1998

The 15-month economic crisis and the political turmoil have made people within and outside Malaysia wander what would happen. Since 1 September 1998, the Government has embarked on capital control measures: the Ringgit cannot be used outside Malaysia. China has done the same thing with Renminbi for many years. But then China is a giant and Malaysia a pigmy.

Some like the measures and some do not. The antagonists try their best to discredit the Malaysian Government. The protagonists hope that these measures will result in economic recovery. Certainly, the traders can now make plans without fearing that the currency would depreciate.

On Wednesday 14 October 1998, from 7.30 PM to 11.30 PM, DAP will be having a seminar on the Economic Crisis and Recovery

at the Federal Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The speakers will be Sdr Lim Kit Siang, Dr Chandra Muzaffar, Professor Jomo Sundaram and Tengku Aziz.

There are many views on the economic crisis and the foreign exchange measures. The Government presents good news on the situation, hoping that the people will go along with its policy.
Foreign media are critical. What is the truth? Will Malaysia be the first or the last to recover from the crisis?

The public are welcome to attend the seminar which will be exciting. You will be able to know more about what goes on in the country. Our previous economic seminars have attracted many people. This time the speakers may be able to throw more light on the economic crisis and the likelihood of recovery.

Dr Tan Seng Giaw
