The Malaysian Prime Minister Would Have To Ensure That The White Paper On The Grik Arms Heist, The Sauk Incident,Would Really Reflect The Truth
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the wish of the Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad to let people know the truth about Sauk incident. 26 July 2000

Day 25 Grik Arms Heist sees the desire of the Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr Mahahthir Mohamad to tell the truth about the incident. We hope he can do something to present an objective White Paper. As the incident is clouded in mystery, one way is to include independent persons somehow in the investigations of the incident.

Since 2 July 2000, multiple statements by the Government and rumours have obfuscated the issue. Barisan Nasional leaders blame others who counter the Government salvos. People are in the dark and this is grist to the mill of rumours and fear.

From the various conflicting statements, the chicken are coming home to roost. The Barisan Nasional leaders have used the mass media to its advantage. But, the people do not necessarily believe in their explanations. For example, who and how many people robbed the Territorial Army Camp in Grik of its weapons? How was the Al-Ma'unah involved?

Dr Mahathir said after the Barisan Nasional Supreme Council meeting yesterday that the killing of a policeman, a Hindu, and a soldier, a Christian, in Sauk by members of the Al-Ma'unah group was not

a case of hatred against non-Muslims, not a case of Muslims going after non-Muslims.

"It is important that members are made aware of what had happened so that they can explain the truth to the rakyat to avoid any misunderstanding that the killings were done in the name of Islam," he added.

In our multiracial society, we welcome any effort to foster harmony and tolerance. If this is the Prime Minister's intention, the people should be happy. To achieve this, Dr Mahathir would have to try his utmost to present an unbiased White Paper, telling the people the whole truth.

Armed Forces everywhere set up boards to investigate military mishaps. Similarly, on 12 July 2000, the Defence Minister Dato' Seri Najib announced forming two boards, manned by military officers, to investigate the Sauk incident. While military men deal with military matters, how does the Government convince the public that the investigations have been done impartially? The Prime Minister would have to work out how he can include independent observers, so that the Sauk Incident White Paper can be accepted by the majority.
