There Is A Need To Improve The Efficiency And Discipline Of The Immigration Department including The Efficient Maintenance Of Electronic Equipment, Thus Improving The Image Of The Country
Statement by DrTan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the use of autogates at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, KLIA, starting from 1 August 2000

There are complaints against the Malaysian Immigration Department icluding its counters in airports and ports. Yesterday, its director-general Datuk Aseh Che Mat announced the use of autogates for Malaysian passport holders from 1 August 2000. They will be able to flash their passports at an autogate at the KLIA, avoiding the hassle to stamp the passports. By the year 2005, virtually all Malaysian pasports will contain computer chips and autogates will be universal.

Services at Malaysian immigration counters are not the best nor the worst in the world. For example, the services at the KLIA counters have improved somewhat. We hope that these will be better, projecting a good image.

The use of electronic equipment should ensure a better and faster service. But, all gadgets are operated by humans who can make mistakes and machines can go wrong. If something goes awry, what do you do? The Immigration Department should recruit, train and supervise staff memebers of better quality. At the same time, it should maintain these gadgets properly. It will be a shame to misuse or abandon modern equipment at a large cost to the public.

As tourists, we also experience bad attitude of immigration personnel in countries such as UK,

USA and Australia. Maybe, they are afraid of illegal immigrants or human cargoes.

While we are waiting for the Immigration Department to improve further, we cannot help but notice that tourists from certain countries may be treated better. For example, English is widely used at immigration counters and airports. English, German and American tourists appear to be treated better. After the World War Two defeat, Japanese have succeeded in making Japan into the world's second most powerful economic power. Japanese language is seen at tourist destinations including immigration counters and airports. Despite the language barrier, Japanese tourists appear to be treated more courteously.

Not all countries can be like Japan and Germany, rising from the ashes to be international economic powers. Therefore, Malaysian immigration department must ensure that all tourists, be they from small or big economic powers, are treated equally and courteously.

Just like countries such as UK, USA, Germany, France, Australia and New Zealand, Malaysia is facing increasing problems of illegal immigrants. There must be correct ways of handling them as opposed to tourists. As we woo more tourists into the country, let us treat them well.
