Ask Parliament To Discuss The Malaysian Grik Arms Robbery Incident Motion to adjourn the House of Parliament to discuss a definite matter of public importance under Standing Order 18 (1)&(2) by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on 10 July 2000   | |||||||
| The motion reads: That this House be adjourned for the purpose of discussing the Grik Arms Robbery incident, in Perak, Malaysia. At 2.15 am on 2 July 2000, a group of men wearing army fatigues with ranks and berets robbed 14 M16 rifles and communication equipment at the number two Territorial Army post in Sungai Rui, Gerik. At 4.15 am the same day, an estimated 15 armed men with similar attire stole about 105 automatic weapons, over 5000 rounds of ammunitions and other equipment from Camp 304, Gerik. They got away by three Pajero four-wheel drive vehicles with army number plates. On 3 July 2000 at 4.00 pm, three Pajero were found at a durian orchard, near Jenalek Primary School at Sauk, a village in Grik. Over 2000 army personnel and many police surrounded the robbers. At 7.45 am, on 4 July 2000, two soldiers were injured and two policemen were detained by the robbers at Jenalek Hill, Grik. At 6.30 am the following |
day, one robber was injured in a shoot-out with the army. Between 2.05 am and 5.15 am, on 6 July 2000, various efforts were used to arrest the robbers. Finally, a total of 27 robbers surrendered and three people died. Cheers to the rescuers. A fanatical religious group, Al-Ma'unah, is thought to cause the incident. Its main leader is Mohd Amin Mohd Razali. The incident raises many questions. The statements by the Defence Minister Dato' Seri Najib and the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, have been confusing. Security in army camps, discipline, procedure, the storage of weapons, the chain of commands, the role of the police and the different aspects of the existence of such a fanatical group require a comprehensive enquiry, the report of which presented as a white paper in parliament. The consequences and implications of this incident on the nation are big. It is a definite matter of urgent public importance.
