Call On The Malaysian Barisan Nasional Government To Fulfill The Promises Of The Teluk Kemang By-election
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the reduced BN majority in the Teluk Kemang by-election. 12.6.2000

The Teluk Kemang by-election in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, reduced the ruling (National Front) Barisan Nasional, BN, majority from 9,942 to 5,972 votes. BN candidate Suthinathan had 24,500 and (the Alternative Front) Barisan Alternatif, BA, Parti Keadilan candidate Ruslan Kassim 18,528, voter turnout being 68.18%. In 1999, BN polled 27,112 and BA (Malaysian Democratic Action Party, DAP) 17,170, voting rate being 68.93%.

With the majority reduced by nearly one-third, BN is less likely to blow its own trumpet. Instead, it is bent on finding excuses such as the low voting rate, turning the pigs into the clover.

BN used its overwhelming advantage in money, machinery and mass media to cover every house in Teluk Kemang. It was stuck up with increasing its majority.

It showed a bold front, making vows to the voters. But vows made in storms are forgotten in calms. Let BN fulfill its promises.

For example, BN leaders such as the Malaysian Chinese Association, MCA, president Dato' Seri Dr Ling Leong Sik attended the fund-rasing dinner of the Chung Hwa Independent Chinese High School in Port Dickson, Teluk Kemang. He said the Government

would consider allocations to the school.

Public Works Minister Dato' Seri S. Samy Vellu pledged to improve the basic facilities including the allocation of RM5 million for the purpose. He also offered extra financial help for each pig farm with over 2,000 heads before the encephalitis epidemic. The epicemic last year killed over 100 people and the government culled millions of pigs.

The Agriculture Minister Dauk Affendi vowed on behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that the Government would allow Integrated Pig Farming Area in the constituency. Before the by-election, the local government did not issue any license for pig-rearing after the encephalitis epidemic.

The people wish that the day does not obliterate the promise of the night. They are waiting for BN to implement their promises. Each scheme must be done fairly. The Government should draw up the Integrated Farming Area, making sure that there is no exploitation over the sale of land, infrastructure and maintenance cost. It should compensate epidemic victims reasonably such as raising the amount from RM120 to RM250 per head of pig culled.
