Independent probe team to investigate Anwar's allegation of police brutality. Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the team of police officers to investigate the former Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim's allegation that he was assaulted by the Malaysian police. 2 October 1998.   | |||||||
| On 29 and 30 September 1998, Anwar was charged in the Sessions courts. He alleged that the police beat him up on the 20 September 1998 when he was detained. Certainly, there were swelling of his left eye and some bruises on his right arm. Were they self-inflicted or caused by the police? Anwar faces five charges of sodomy and five of corrupt practices. Yesterday, Dr Mahathir sad that there would be an investigation into the allegation and that if the police harmed Anwar, action would be taken against them. Today, the press reports |
that the team to investigate the allegation is headed by Malacca Criminal Investigation Department head Assistant Commissioner of police Mat Zain Ibrahim. After having been in the police for 23 years, Mat Zain is expected to know the workings of the police. The Home Minister reiterated that he would not tolerate any unlawful police action. But, the truth must be established first before any action can be taken. However professional the probe team is, there is a lingering doubt that it may be biased. Some people suspect that a police may protect another police.
