| Malaysia is going through a tough period with the economic crisis and the political turbulence. On 2 September 1998, Anwar was sacked and subsequently detained under the Internal Security Act, ISA. ( detention without trial) on 20 September 1998. On 29 and 30 September 1998, he was charged at the Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya Sessions Courts respectively. He pleaded not guilty to five charges of corrupt practices and five of sodomy. Anwar's left eye was swollen, and there were bruises on his right arm. Apparently, he told reporters that he was beaten on the night he was detained until he "virtually passed out until the morning." Mahathir commented on his former deputy's allegation by saying that the wounds could have been self-inflicted. He added that there was nothing for the police to gain by "destroying" the detainee and that there would be full investigations headed by a non-special branch officer to get into the bottom of Anwar's injury. If it is proven true, then the police personnel involved | will be punished. I have always maintained that Anwar should be charged in court and that his trials should be fair and seen to be fair. There should be justice. He should not be detained under ISA. The injury on Anwar causes concern about the professionalism of the police. It is correct that a probe is carried out to ascertain the truth. But it is not enough for the police to investigate. Some people believe that the police may be partial to other policemen. The Prime Minister should consider the type of persons to investigate the allegation. I am sure he would like the people to know the truth. He should think seriously about setting up an independent team to probe Anwar's allegation. Let the world see that the Government is fair. At a time when we are trying to revive the economy and to instill confidence among the people that there are political stability, sound economic fundamentals and good governance in Malaysia, it is important that the Anwar allegation is dealt with professionally.
