Call On The Malaysian Human Resources Minister To Review The Effective Or Ineffective Code Of Practice On Sexual Harassment With A View To Promulgate Enforceable Laws Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong at the media conference to support the stop sexual harassment signature campaign launched by Women Crisis Centre   | |||||||
| This year, six women complained of sexual harassment against the general manager of an international hotel in Penang. Two have resigned and four have been dismissed by the hotel after a domestic enquiry. We call on the Human Resources Minister Datuk Fong Chan Onn to investigate the case and to take appropriate action. Let us know the truth. By sexual harassment we mean any unwanted or uninvited sexual behaviour which a reasonable person regards as offensive, humiliating or intimidating. There are various shades and colours to this vexing problem. The minister prattles about the Code of Practice on the Prevention and Education of Sexual Harassment in the Workplace. On paper, it sounds good. In practice, not many employers have put in place the procedures to deal with the issue. We hope Datuk Fong can publish |
the details on the effective or ineffective code including the number of employers who have adopted it. The minister should institute a truly comprehensive survey on the incidence and seriousness of sexual harassment in Malaysia. His statements on these are vague. Sexual harassment done to a man or a woman continues not only in Malaysia but all over the world. It occurs in workplaces, schools and universities. Hence, besides the Human Resources Minister, the Education Minister Tan Sri Musa Mohamad must look into the prevalence of the problem in educational institutions such as tertiary institutions. It will take a long time before we can begin to see some results on the enforcement of laws or codes on secual assessment. Let us start by supporting the signature campaign launched by the Women Crisis Centre.
