Trials in court for Anwar
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the arrest of the former Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahimon 20 september 1998. 24 September 1998.

After the sacking and then the arrest of Anwar, people are waiting for the truth. It is natural that some have doubts about the allegations against Anwar of sexual misconduct, corruption, sedition, murder and treason. There are those who support the Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad's action and allegations.

The series of public rallies without police permit by Anwar and his supporters in several parts of the country has fired some imagination among people. It is unfortunate that there were some damages at the Kuala Lumpur Merdeka Square as a result of the huge rally on 20 September 1998 at a time when Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom was attending the church nearby.

Mahathir has countered Anwar's charges of his government's corruption and cronyism by saying that Anwar is using reformation to distract attention

on his personal problems. He described Anwar's illegal sexual activities.

On 22 September 1998, the Prime Minister told reporters, "The two men (Anwar's adopted brother and speech writer) were charged (for allowing Anwar to sodomize them), so Anwar will also be charged."

Anwar did threaten to release documents about corruption in the Mahathir Government. "I want him to prove the corruption," Mahathir replied. "But he must remember we have proof of his corruption."

Dr Mahathir has said that Anwar will be charged in court and that he has evidence against the latter's wrong-doing. We hope he will refrain from using ISA. Instead, put Anwar and his supporters on trials in a truly impartial court. Let the world see that we are capable of giving Malaysians fair trials as we have shown that we could organize Commonwealth Games.
