The Malaysian Government Should Do More To End The Sanctions On Iraq Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on a decade of sanctions on Iraq. 5 March 2000   | |||||||
| In the 1990 Gulf War, President Saddam Hussein of Iraq invaded Kuwait. We condemned it. Since August 1990, the United States of America, USA, has led United Nations, UN, economic sanctions on Iraq, causing untold sufferings. There are shortages of foods, medicines and other things. After nearly a decade of sanctions, hundreds of thousands of people especially children have died or been malnourished. There should be independent investigations on the humanitarian conditions in Iraq. |
amount of its oil in exchange for food and medicines are not enough to improve the conditions. Meanwhile, UN maintains the sanctions until Prsident Saddam Hussein resumes cooperation with UN arms inspectors. There have been controversy on the impartiality of some of the inspectors. US and United Kingdom, UK, are adamant on keeping the sanctions. What are their real motives? Are they mainly based on the 'noncooperation policy' of Iraq? We call on the Government to increase its efforts to campaign for ending the sanctions.
