Please Make Public The Real STate Of Indah Water Konsortium, The Malaysian Privatized Sewage System Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the woes of people not getting satisfactory services from Indah Water Konsortium, IWK. 24 February 2000   | |||||||
| For nearly a decade, the sewage system in Malaysia has been privatized under Indah Water Konsortium, IWK. This company has been in dire difficulties. Hence, people continue to complain because services have been unsatisfactory. When the bill to allow for the privatization was debated in Parliament, we insisted that it would not work. The public were asked to pay for services at a relatively high rates for over 30 years, the period for the concession. Naturally, there were protests especially those who had private septic tanks and were required to pay monthly for the future installation of central sewage system. The rates were reduced. At one stage, IWK was restructured with RM 200 million soft loan from the Government. It continues to suffer as many people refuse to pay for the services or lack of services. Apparently, the debt of IWK is about RM 700 million. Is the Government planning to bail |
it out? We have been told that a public accounting company has been appointed to investigate IWK. So far, we have not heard of any report from the company. The parent company of IWK is Prime Utilities and Idris Hydraulic has 30% of its shares. These companies are said to have party political connections such as to the dominant ruling party, UMNO. How will the Government take over the company? If it takes over, then this will be a reversal of the privatization policy. The Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad has always stressed the need to get rid of business politics and money politics. But then such company as IWK has been suspected as having party political link since the beginning. We hope that the Government can let us know the real state of affairs of IWK and its intention to rescue the troubled company. Meanwhile, sewage services must be maintained throughout the country.
