Let Us Hope That The New Millennium Will Bring Peace To The World and Meaningful Democracy To Malaysia Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on welcomg the New Millennium 28.12.1999   | |||||||
| Let us hope that the Third Millennium will have fewer tragedies but more achievements such as enough food and water for all human beings on earth and better quality of life for all people, not just a small privileged few. The end of the last millennium has seen the emergence of the unipolar world with the United States of America reigning unchallenged. U.S.A. has become the policeman of the world as seen in the bombing of Yugoslavia by Nato, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, over Kosovo. There will be forces united to balance the might of America. Politically, the 29 November 1999 General Election set forth a new milestone in Malaysian politics. UMNO power has been eroded. Politics is less racial and less religious. DAP has won more seats, but its strength has been weakened. It has to reorganize and to move with the time. Economically, the Barisan Nasional, the National Front, BN, Government has promised a quicker economic recovery during the general elections. In some aspects, there is a sign of recovery. But, the Government and all people will have to work towards a faster economic recovery. Bank mergers should not be hampered by cronyism, nepotism or business politics. Only after these scourges are eradicated, can Malaysian |
banks become healthier. In education, the country is witnessing a non-party political educationist becoming the new Minister of Education. He is Tan Sri Musa Mohamed who was the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Science Malayisa. We hope that he can help solve the various problems such as the shortage of teachers, equipment, schools, and universities as well as the public concern about the lowering of education standard. We also hope that he will guide us towards the world-class quality of education. The Government has pomised to build new primary Chinese schools. To fulfil this promise, it would have to allocate at least RM3 million and five acres of land per school. In the judiciary, let us hope that the New Millennium will bring justice for all. In health, the people will not like to see the recurrence of viral encephalitis epidemic which claimed 105 lives in May and June 1999. The Government must review the whole health system so that it will gradually attain international standard. In housing, the Government would have to make sure that it implement its pledges to house as many people as possible. To achieve this, it has to get rid of irregularities so that truly poor people have a chance to own low-cost houses.
