Make Sure That The Electoral Roll Is Devoid Of Fabrication and Distortion. Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chiarman and Parliamentary Candidate For The Kepong Constituency. 25 November 1999   | |||||||
| Since the dissolution of Parliement on 11 November 1999, we contacted the Election Commission for the diskett of electoral roll for the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. We got it the next day. But, the electoral roll in book form was only available three days after booking. Something is not right. We spent three days to try to figure out how to use the diskett. Only after getting the computer technician who is used to the diskett from the Election Commission did we manage to make it work. Some voters who voted previously have their names transferred to a different constituency such as from Kepong to Cheras. Some no longer have their name in the electoral roll. We suspect that some are phantom voters. On 25, 26 and 27 November 1999, I am going to Penang, Malacca and Perak respectively to look at the distortion and fabrication in the electoral roll and to help DAP |
candidates in the elections. Since the Director of the Election Commission Dato' Omar has guaranteed that the elections would be fair, we hope that he will ensure that there will not be distortion and fabrication such as phantom voters in the electoral roll for 9.6 million voters for the polling day on 29 November 1999. As it is, the campaign period for the general elections is only 7 days. It is a rainy season. The Election Commission has not been manifestly seen to be monitoring the expenditure of the candidates. Neither has it taken any action against the total domination of the Barisan Nasional, the National Front, over the mass media, in particular television. Now, there are complains of distortion and fabrication. The Director should be true to his words, showing that he cares for the independence of the Commission and the fairness of the general elections.
