Make The 29 November 1999, Polling Day, A Holiday.
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman, on the unfairly short election period for the 10th general elections.

The 10th Malaysian Parliamentary Election is on 29 November 1999 which is a Monday. Nomination is on 20 November 1999. The campaign period is actually about seven days. Since it rains almost every afternoon and evening, the period may be shorter.

Meanwhile, the Barisan Nasional (National Front of 14 parties) is using government machinery including state-owned television to campaign. One of the TV channel has put up pictures of Barisan Alternatif (Alternative Front of four parties) leaders, with the explanation that they

are spreading lies and falsehood. The BA should be given the same opportunity to give its side of the story.

Besides the very short campaign period, polling day on 29 November 1999 is not a holiday. What is more, it is a Monday. We call on the Government (caretaker) todeclare the day a public holiday.

Since the Election Commission has said that it is truly independent and fair, it should support the suggestion to declare the polling day a public holiday to make it convenient for the voters to cast their ballots.

Dr Tan Seng Giaw
