Outline Of The Common Manifesto Of The Barisan Alternatif (Alternative Front)
At the end of October 1999, the Barisan alternatif, BA, published the Common Manifesto, 'Towards A Just Malaysia', to set off a concerted efforts to crush the hegemony of the Barisan Nasional (National Front). 15 November 1999.

 
The Barisan Alternative, BA, comprises the Democratic Action Party, DAP, Pan Malaysian Islamic Party, PAS, National Justice Party, Keadilan and Malaysian People's Party, PRM. In an effort to overcome the overwhelming advantage of the National Front, BN, BA has announced its Common Manifesto in October 1999. Full text: see Malaysia.net/DAP.

BA swears solemnly that it is totally committed to the struggle to bring into being a Malaysian nation based on justice.

The BN administration has undermined the authority of various democratic institutions such as the Judiciary, the Police, the Civil Service and the Media. There are oppression, corruption, nepotism and cronyism.

BN lacks a sound policy on agriculture, food production, housing for those with low and moderate inclomes, quality education, medical services and transport.

BA would safeguard the rights of all malaysians.

The objectives of the BA Manifesto

are:

strenghtening the national economy, enhancing of government transparency and accountability; creation of a new social contract, fostering national unity, construction of a genuinely democratic society and restoration of Malaysia's good reputation and status on the world stage.

For example, raise the level of income exempt from income-tax up to RM12,000 a year as well as raise children's allowances to more reasonable levels; establish a Royal Commission to review the judicial and legal system in the country; review the planning and imlementation of education policy so as to create an integrated educational system that is of high quality, fair and democratic; ensure provision of social services which are comprehensive, fair and efficient, this being one of the basic resposibilites if government and raise the retirement age to 60, in line with the rise in the general life expectancy of Malayisans.
