The Period Of Campaigning For The Tenth Malaysian General Election Is So Short
Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman on the Malaysian General Elections on 29 November 1999. 15 November 1999

On 10 November 1999, the Prime Minister announced the dissolution of Parliament on 11 November 1999. Two days later the Election Commission has fixed the date of nominations on 20 November 1999 and polling on 29 November 1999.

Meanwhile, the Barisan Nasonal (the National Front of 14 parties) continues to use the government machinery, the mass media and the huge war chest to send forth platittudes, half-truths and downright lies about its administration from 25 April 1995 to 11 November 1999.

The Barisan Alternatif (the Alternative Front of four parties) is challenging the BN with tremendous constraints, robbed of the mass media, the lack of machinery and fund. It is David and Goliath.

From 20 to 29 November, the period is 10 days theoratically. But, in practice the nomination and polling days are not counted, leaving about 7 days of campaigning. The last but one day is not for campaigning. Now, it is the rainy season. We would be lucky to have four or five days for campaigning. Even then, with rain almost every night, there is virtually no fine weather for campaigning.

How do we unravel to the electorate the lies, the platittudes and the half-truths of BN? We shall have to clench our teeth and struggle as best we can in the hope that we can deny the BN two-third majority. If we succeed, the BN hegemony will be broken. This will be healthy for the country.

Dr Tan Seng Giaw
