Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw, DAP National Vice-Chairman and MP for Kepong on the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Rahim Nor today. 8 January 1999.

The investigation of the alleged police responsibility on the former Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim's injuries must continue. The resignation of the IGP has not revealed the person or persons alleged to have beaten Anwar.

The action of Tan Sri Rahim Nor does not expose the mystery surrounding Anwar's injuries. For the good things which were done by Tan Sri Rahim such as his team's efforts to end the conflict between the Communists and the Government, we express our appreciation.

While the police show their professionalism in other fields, the handling of Anwar's detention has shown the lack of it. At a time when the country is experiencing the economic crisis and the outcry for more professionalism in all our services, the incident on Anwar's injuries has to be resolved.

Over three months, the police team has not yet completed its probe on the alleged responsibility. It was the Attorney General Tan Sri Mohtar Abdullah who stated three days ago that the team has not identified the police officer or officers who were alleged to be responsible for the incident.

The whole world is waiting to know the full story behind the allegation. A story untold is not good enough. Therefore, we reiterate that an independent commission of inquiry be set up to seek the truth. Let us show the accountability and the transparency.

The people are waiting for the truth and the appropriate action to be taken so that they can rest assured that no detainees--whatever their stations--will be mistreated by the police or other departments.

Dr Tan Seng Giaw
