Menu Explanation

Main Menu

1: Inventory
2: Techniques
3: Equipment
4: Status
5. Options

Inventory Menu

1. Weapons
2. Armor
3. Restorative items
4. Exit inventory screen

Each item type has it's own submenu. There are three item types: weapons, armor and general items. Press A from the main inventory menu to access the weapon, armor or item submenus.

Weapons: Any weapon you buy, unequip or pick up from a treasure chest will appear here. I am not sure if the Elsydeon is given to you directly by Le Roof or if it's it's in a chest on the upper floors of the Silence Temple. If I play through again I will check to see exactly how it is obtained.

Armor: Generally the same thing as weapons. Only armor and helmets are stored here.

You cannot equip anything from these two submenus. But when you confirm a selection there with A a window with two choices will appear. At first I thought that the first choice was the "look" command from the original game. But the text is the same each time. So I'm thinking it's canceling your selection or telling you that the item can't be used. The second choice is "discard" this will allow you to drop items.

Items: Restorative items, telepipes, escapipes and the three vehicles go here. Unlike the first two menus the top choice will let you use the item accordingly. Here you can use restoratives to cure status and restore HP by selecting the respective item then pressing A. You can then select the target. Star dew affects all biological characters so it will be used on them automatically. If you select a telepipe the warp list will appear and you can make your selection from the available locations. If you select the escapipe you'll be warped directly outside of whatever town or structure you are in. This does not work on Kuran or the Air Castle and you cannot telepipe in those locations either.

Vehicles can be used by selecting them from the item submenu and pressing A on the first choice. In order to use vehicles you must be on the overworld map and the vehicle must be usable on the planet you are currently on.

The last selection on the inventory menu will cancel out the window and it's the only way to exit.

Techniques

The first menu is the character list. Characters are listed in the same order as the status screen. Press A to select a character. This will bring up their tech menu. Choose a tech with A then select the character to use it on when the new window pops up. Characters in this window appear in the same order and you can see their max HP and status icons (if any).

Note that even support techs can be selected here. And while they won't do anything you will still use the TP. You can also use rever on living characters. So be careful.

For a full list of techs please check the Charts section. All techs listed there appear in the same order as they do here.

Equipment

This menu allows you to change a character's equipment. Press left and right to cycle through your party members. Only characters currently in the party will appear.

There are three slots: helmet, armor and weapon.

To equip something select the appropriate slow then press A. The first option will let you cycle through what's available for that character by pressing down and up.. This only works if nothing was equipped in that slot. If you already have something equipped you'll need to use the second option to remove it. The last option takes you out of the menu but you can also do that by pressing B when the cursor is on an equipment slot.

There are two values on this screen. The top one is attack and the bottom one is defense. These are the only two stats that are affected by equipment. All other stats can only be increased by leveling up.

- - - -

Status

Use the left or right buttons to cycle through each character's status page. It only shows current stats, levels, HP/TP and EXP. If you are poisoned or paralyzed the status effects will not show up. You cannot loop back to Chaz by pressing right on the fifth party member's status page.

- - - -

Option

There are three options to choose from here. Load data, save data and sound on/off.

To load data you must already have data saved in one of the two available save slots. These slots display the level Chaz was at hen you last saved. Select a slot and press A to load it then exit the options menu. Press B to cancel.

To save data select a slot and press A. Press B to cancel. You can only save on the overworld map. But you may load data from anywhere. Because you cannot save anywhere but on the overworld map you would have to beat the first boss and exit Piata before you had access to the saving feature.

The third option in the options menu will allow you to toggle the sound on and off. The first choice turns it on and the second choice turns it off. It's not just the background music that will be turned off. The sound effects will be turned off as well.

Game Mechanics

Status Effects

There are three types of status effects; poison, paralysis and sleep. When a character has one inflicted on them the corresponding icon will appear in battle within the box that contains their name, HP and TP. The icon will also appear on the camp technique screen when you select a technique to use on someone. Status effects cannot be inflicted on Wren and Demi. I have not checked if staying at an inn cures bad status.

Poison: The character affected loses some HP each round in battle/from each step taken outside of battle. It can be cured with the antidote item (20 meseta) or the anti technique (8 TP).

Paralysis: The character affected becomes immobile and will stay that way until cured. If all living characters are paralyzed the game will be over. It can be cured with the cure paral item (50 meseta) or the rimpa technique.

Sleep: The character affected becomes immobile but will eventually wake up after a few rounds. It can be cured with the arows technique (8 TP).

A Note On Techniques & Skills

In this game techniques are ally targeted heal and support while skills are enemy targeted attacks. All skills are damage dealing save for two, moonshade and bindwa, that stun the enemy. Both of those skills seem to work 100% of the time and are very handy against enemies that you can't run from. They eventually wear off after a few rounds but you still get a big advantage to wear down or destroy tough enemies before taking too much damage.

Androids cannot learn techniques just like in the original game. Wren and Demi will never gain any TP. This poses a problem with android HP recovery. They do not get their recover skills. This may be due to the way techs and skills are programmed.

I've listed the techs and skills on the charts page in the order they are acquired. This order goes from left to right. Here's an example of how you'd read it in game:

Tech 1 Tech 2
Tech 3 Tech 4

Skill 1 Skill 2
Skill 3 Skill 4

Battle

Unlike the original game this version does not have a macro system to save pre-selected battle plans and there are no combination attacks.

When a battle is engaged a menu with two choices will pop up. The top choice starts the battle and the bottom choice will allow you to attempt to run away. Running seems to have a high success rate against most enemies. But there are several that I could never run from. I'm thinking there may simply be an off/on function attached to whether or not certain enemies will let you run away. But I can't be sure.

When you choose to battle another menu will come up that is a vertical version of the icon based battle menu in the original game. The icons are as follows:

Attack (with equipped weapon)
Use technique (must have enough TP. TP will increase with level ups.)
Use item
Use skill (Must have at least one use left of the desired skill. Skill uses increase with level ups)
Defend

After you make a selection for a character press A to confirm it. For anything other than defend you need to move the cursor over the desired enemy/party member. You can cancel a choice by pressing B after making it. But this does not always work. Especially when making the selection for the last member in your party. So be careful and try not to make any mistakes. Once you've made selections for all party members the battle will begin. Agility determines order. If the party is defeated the game will be over and you'll need to continue from your last save. If you are victorious a results screen will appear and you'll get meseta and EXP.

Defend reduces damage greatly. It looks to be around half although there may be some variation. It is very useful when a character could die on the next round. Especially if they have low agility and are likely to take their turn after the enemy. Putting a character like this on the defense can greatly increase their chances of being healed by a faster character before they end up being dealt fatal damage.

Vehicles

Things are a bit different during a vehicle battle. Vehicles each have a fixed amount of SP which is lost when damage is taken. You cannot level up or upgrade the SP value and there is no way to restore SP in battle. But it will be completely replenished in the next one. When a battle occurs while in a vehicle a menu with three choices will appear. Press A to confirm your choice. The first choice is a single target attack. If there is more than one enemy you may select the desired target by moving the cursor then pressing A.

The second choice is a multi-target attack that will hit all enemies. This is similar to the "option" special attacks in the original game. But there's only one and its uses are unlimited. The multi-target attack does slightly less damage than the single target attack. You cannot cancel a choice once it has been made and all damage values are fixed. You will get meseta for vehicle battles but you will not gain any EXP.

The third choice is run. And it looks to have a 100% (or at least very close) success rate.

All vehicles are plot/gameplay necessities and there's no way to miss obtaining any of them. Here's a rundown of each vehicle's SP, damage output and on what planets they can be used.

Land Rover: Crosses quicksand
SP: 470
Single target damage: 76
Multi-target damage: 70
Obtained: Machine Center near Tonoe (after the first battle with Zio)

Hydrofoil: Crosses ice, quicksand and water
SP: 760
Single target damage: 212
Multi-target damage: 208

Can be used on: Motavia, Dezolis, Rykros

Warp/Location Lists

Telepipe Warp List

The names appear on the warp list after visiting the respective location. This is how they appear in the final listing. Note that I may be wrong about what the actual names are. For Termi and Meese I just guessed that these are the towns that they used. I also can't read Chinese so I don't know if more Chinese sounding names were used instead. I'm basing this all on the English language version of the original game as that's what I'm most familiar with.

Since you can visit some locations before others (such as Jut and the Esper Mansion) or skip them altogether (like Termi) I don't know how this affects the final listing. But i assume that all the location names are predetermined and will just end up in the right place once every location has been visited.

Miscellaneous

Party Menu (Motavia Spaceport after Rykros)

The characters' names will appear in this order on the party formation menu. I highly recommend that you make an extra save/savestate before doing this since it is a one time only option. The party must be formed in this manner before the final dungeon will appear. Chaz will not appear on the left hand side of this menu because he is permanently defaulted to the first party slot. Talk to Gryz to initiate a conversation that will bring the menu up. Select a character with the cursor and press A to place them in your party. Repeat until all four remaining slots are filled. Note that you cannot cancel a selection once it has been made and all characters will be at the level they were when they were last in your party.

Known Issues

This game is an 8 bit pirate remake of a 16 bit game. So naturally it's going to have a few problems. Nothing seems to be game breaking though. And that's good. But there are some bugs. But at least they are relatively harmless.

1: Occasionally Chaz will attack again after the party has finished attacking for the round. He will use the same attack that he was assigned by the player. I've noticed that this happens the most with airslash but it has occurred with his other skills and his regular attacks as well. It has never happened with techs. Although techs are party targeted heal/support and this issue only seems to occur when targeting the enemy side.. I am not sure if this was intentional design or not. But I think it's a bug. It's mostly harmless and actually useful during tough battles. A usage will be deducted if it's a skill that's been repeated though.

2: I did try saving to one of the two in game save files while on Dezolis but encountered a problem where upon reloading I was back on Motavia and stuck in the ocean. This happened multiple times then stopped happening altogether. This may have had something to do with the location that I saved at and/or the location that I reloaded from. But I cannot remember exactly where it was. Since you are most likely playing this game on an emulator I advise you to use savestates or at least have one as a backup. If the stuck in the ocean bug occurs the only way to escape is to use a telepipe or the hydrofoil to get back on dry land. If you have neither of these things and accidentally save in the ocean you will be permanently stuck there and have to restart your game if you made no backup saves.

3: This really isn't a bug. Rather it appears to be intentional game design. There is no way to heal androids outside of staying at inns or walking around to replenish HP. Healing items and techs will not work. This is true for the original game as well. But at least then Wren and Demi had recovery skills and there was the repair kit item. You can still target an android with a recovery tech or item here, as well as use a revival tech or item. But all you will end up doing is wasting it. I'm not sure why there's no repair kit since Wren is in your party permanently from Zelan right up after Rykros, where you make your own custom party before the final dungeon.

Additionally, androids aren't affected by support techs like shift, saner and deban. These normally target all party members. But you won't see the graphic effect appear on androids nor will they get the effect of the buff. I'm wondering how this works programming-wise. They aren't affected by any ally/party targeted techs or items even though in the original game there are exceptions to that. If I knew more about how these things work I'd check it out in depth. I'm genuinely curious as to how it works.

4: Clarification on the Garuberk Tower glitch: It's the doors. Using an escapipe or telepipe right after entering/exiting a door will cause some minor graphic corruption when you are taken outside as well as cause the party to not follow Chaz properly. Additionally, confirming a menu choice and closing the menu while inside the tower (you don't need to use items) will cause the door animation to repeat. You will more forward a step each time you exit the glitch door. You can use this to move through the walls. It's amusing. But it deactivates if you take a step away from the door. Even trying to move while stuck in a wall will deactivate the glitch, leaving you stuck. If you don't have an espapipe or telepipe you won't be able to do anything and will be forced to reset. Party formation stays ok though.

It looks like the doors in the Garuberk Tower are bugged somehow and confirming on the menu after stepping through one is registered as door activation. That's what the graphic corruption on the overworld probably is. The door animation repeating on a map that doesn't have the correct graphics for it. I'm not sure what causes the party formation to mess up outside. Perhaps they are trying to do a "follow me" with Chaz but are attempting to do so with a door animation that isn't really there. It just plain doesn't work right in the overworld because it's not meant to.

5: When I form a new custom party before the final dungeon I've noticed that if I add Gryz he will always be dead. I am not sure if this is an issue with my particular file or not. I can't remember if Gryz was taken out by Zio or not. I don't even know if that would be a factor. But he's the only character that's affected by this. So be sure to step on the healing tile in the Spaceport before heading out for the final battle if Gryz is in your party.

6: There is a way to go back in time. You can reset the game to the point before fighting Dark Force 2.0 by activating the eye switch again in the Garuberk Tower. I came upon this by accident while messing around with the door glitch. When I warped to the Jut region Gumbious Temple was restored. I found that the Edge was no longer present on Motavia and that I could battle Dark Force 2.0 again. It might be useful for level grinding as long as you don't end up with a lot of back tracking between fights. You cannot undo this glitch after activating it. So once you've hit that eye switch again you are back in time and must redo everything between Dark Force 2.0 and wherever else you were in the game.
