Scottish dance is composed of two distinct styles:
1) Highland dancing, which includes the Scottish Sword Dance, and 2) Scottish Country Dancing.
Traditionally for men only, the Sword Dance, and the well-known Highland Fling, were martial or war dances, done to strengthen warriors for battle. Weapons played an important role in these dances. The Highland Fling, was probably a victory dance, danced on a warrior's targe or shield. Movements are said to mimic those of a deer.
The Gille Callum, which is said by some to be a "prophetic dance," was danced in 1054 at the Battle of Dunsinane. This famous dance is danced over crossed swords.
