Fighting Back--AgainAs we continue to fight what may be a never-ending war against religious fanatics, many forget to realize that we are fighting own own radical clerics. The controversy over John Kerry's support for reproductive freedom, the current debate over filibustering Judicial Nominees, and the never-ending debate over homosexual marriage, all show how far the US is away from what Karen Armstong in Battle For God calls "Secular Modernity. The inconsistencies among the fundamentalists is another problem. A "pro- life" movement that seems to insist that life takes about a 75-year break between birth and death, allows for imperial wars, and seems in many cases to exclude the planet. So I have decided to bring this site back up as a resource for opposition to these forces. I see the site focusing on three main areas:
I also will have links to religious groups that do "get it" to a point and are working to fight the fundamentalist threat. I may also have ad-hoc sites to deal with issues as they arise, and perhaps even look at another form of fundamentalism that has taken root in the US. There's a good chance that this site will eventually become a 'blog, like The Next War, or incorporate a 'blog. As an example of what I mean, here are a few links to some articles on the new Pope. What I believe the Catholic Church has done with this selection is try and stop further losses. The Church is losing people in Latin America and Africa, which were once growth areas, to more evangelical and fundamentalist movements. They, however, are forgetting the people that they may be losing to more progressive faiths like the United Church Of Christ in America, and those that have simply left the faith entirely. |
