ORU employees
launch student scholarship
By Sheldon Yoder
A
new scholarship set up by four current and two past employees of
the Internet Technology (IT) Department promises financial aid to
juniors and seniors.
"We want to help a student doing well academically-but perhaps not
financially-to continue to go out into every man's world," co-founder
David Askins said.
The idea originated first with Database Administrator Tom Burchfield.
He took the idea to Askins, Jeff Pace, Brian Young, Kyle Nordberg
and Jon Anderson-the latter two retired from ORU-and thus was born
the Storehouse Scholarship. The name is derived from Malachi 3:10,
which commands individuals to bring tithes to the storehouse in
order that they might be blessed.
In September 2002 the group approached Cherry Horner in the Office
of Development and Estate Planning department and began discussing
the logistics of setting up such a scholarship. The scholarship
was formally established Nov. 20.
Every year, the group hopes to allocate $2,000 toward the fund,
of which half will be awarded to a student and the other half placed
in a restricted fund. After the fund has accumulated $15,000, it
will become an endowed scholarship, meaning future scholarship money
will come from the account's interest alone.
The six do not want to limit the financial contributors to themselves.
Other individuals have already pledged $1,700. Ideally, they would
like to see other employees and interested persons assisting in
the growth of the scholarship.
"It could grow big," Horner said of the fund's potential if others
commit finances to the scholarship. "What one person couldn't afford
to do alone, a group could."
Juniors and seniors with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher
who are in need of financial assistance will be able to pick up
applications in the Financial Aid Department for the fall 2003 semester.
Initially, the scholarship will award $500 a semester to one student,
but as the fund grows, the amount of scholarship money and the number
of recipients will increase.
