Jesus te ama
By Lindy Spore
One
morning in April 2002, a young man had a vision to stand out on
the streets of Tulsa proclaiming Jesus' love to the world. He didn't
know how he was to achieve this dream, but on that April morning,
all he did was tell God that he was available and ready for the
challenge. He began by pulling a tac-board from underneath his bed,
painting it red and writing in bold white letters, "JESUS TE AMA"
(Jesus loves you). This young man's vision was preparing to take
root.
Since that day, Adam Cowherd's ministry, "Conspiracy of Kindness,"
has grown to nearly 20 people.
I sat down with Cowherd over breakfast and my mouth was hinged open
as he told incredible stories that are less than a year old. One
man by the name of Augustine was from the inner parts of Mexico.
He escaped by hiding in the engine of a train for two days. Out
of 20 men, he and one other person were able to get past the border.
The second day that he was in America, he walked near 3rd Street
and Lewis.
Cowherd saw this man and heard the Lord say to ask him to paint
a sign for him. Cowherd said, "I'll pay you $5 to paint this sign."
The man agreed. He painted it red with those same bold white letters
reading "JESUS TE AMA." What a perfect opportunity placed right
before Cowherd; now he could share Jesus with him.
The man said, "Pretty sign." Cowherd replied, "Almost as pretty
as my heart when Jesus painted me red with His blood." It was hard
to believe that this man had never heard of the saving blood of
Jesus Christ.
This man did not accept Jesus that night. The next week, as the
group was witnessing out on the same corner once again, the man
came back. Adam asked him if he wanted to paint another sign for
$5. He agreed and painted it. When he finished, the group spoke
with him once again about Jesus' love for him. That night he believed
in the redeeming love that only the Savior can offer.
In the middle of November, a man by the name of Jose caught sight
of the signs proclaiming the love of Christ. He had only been in
America for two days when he received Jesus. By the third day of
his new life in the United States, he also had a new life in Jesus,
and now attends the Centro Famular de Adoracion, the church which
supports "Conspiracy of Kindness."
Several weeks ago, the team realized how inadequately dressed some
of the people they saw were. It was down to almost 35 degrees one
evening and the team saw a man wearing only a flannel shirt and
pants. Cowherd realized they could not just bring Bibles to these
people. And so the vision expanded and clothing and blankets have
been donated to help the needs of many. Every Friday night at 5
p.m. Cowherd meets with the group with the simple message: Jesus
loves you. God said to him, "My people are hurting and they need
My love." Cowherd has listened and followed through with the fire
which God has sparked within him. "Sharing the love of Jesus and
the simple gospel message..." is their mission. Every Friday, between
5 and 8 p.m., people are saved. The team only goes to one corner
now, but as their ministry grows, they will expand to several corners
to minister.
As for myself, I was daunted and fearful with the very thought of
standing out proclaiming the love of Jesus in Spanish. Having only
studied Spanish for a few years in high school, I have retained
little knowledge of the language. However, my fears were put to
rest when Cowherd informed me that you do not need to know Spanish.
If you are willing, God will come through and use you, regardless
of how unequipped you feel.
His vision began with a little spark inside his spirit. That flame
has brought about change in the lives of countless people. As for
Augustine and Jose, I ask this: How many will be influenced because
of them? How many lives will the Holy Spirit renew because they
stepped onto the corner of 3rd and Lewis?
God has so many things for us to do. All He wants is for us to open
our hands, ready for Him to pour into us what He wants poured out
to the hungry hearts of the cities and the nations. Take that step
on the corner of 3rd and Lewis. You never know what the Lord has
in store for you and the people he has for you to touch.
