When did you begin to dabble in art?
When I could pick up a crayon. I started writing and illustrating
books when I could read and write. But I've always liked to draw.
I really like to write too.
When did you start to think of yourself as an artist?
Probably when I was writing books. I don't remember exactly
when; I was pretty young.
What do you think defines an artist?
A person who creates. God is the first artist. Because we're
made in His image, we are also creators. I don't see art as just
typical "visual arts" but all the arts. God made us to
express ourselves through art, through creating.
What is "art"?
Music, dance, drama, film, visual arts, public speaking, decorating,
fashion. Any way that people are creative. Communication is art
- the way you talk and the way you walk communicate things about
you. What we usually think of as arts are accepted ways of expressing
ourselves.
Why do you like artists?
They are different. They push the bounds of what is normal.
They make the world a new place every day. Artists are history makers.
They see what "can be" and have the boldness to make it
that way. They are some of the first people to challenge what society
does wrong. They challenge the world and change it.
What is the responsibility an artist has to his or her culture?
Artists are leaders in their cultures whether they realize it
or not. They are responsible to lead in the right direction.
