Presbyopia may not be serious in near future

Presbyopia might not be a serious problem in the near future. This condition causes a loss of flexibility of the eye's lens as people age.

Optical scientists at the University of Arizona decided to take on this issue. They now believe they can make one pair of glasses that will do the work of two or three lenses. The scientists plan to create lenses that change focus depending on where the person looks.

One option being considered is using a range-finding system, much like those found in a camera, to send electrical impulses that change the way light focuses as it moves through different areas of each lens. The lenses could be ready for use by 2005.
