Just one of those days
By Laura Higgins

Do you ever have one of those days when you wake up totally energized, full of vim and vigor? Today is not one of those days. Even as I sit here, my mood is still smarting from a day gone bad. Now, the way I see it, I have two options: wallow in misery or pull myself up by my bootstraps and get over it. Clearly my second choice is the better of the two, but when was the last time you tried to pull yourself out of a bad mood? By the time you've accomplished your goal, you're too exhausted to enjoy the freedom.

"Why are you downcast oh my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my savior, and my God" (Ps. 42:5). All of us in this world will experience, at one point or another, some (to use the biblically correct term) trials.

Even though we are children of God and a part of His system, we are still in a natural world where Satan runs the show. No matter how great we feel about ourselves, he can still slip in and hurt us. It is during these moments that he adds in the final punch- the infamous attitude slump. Maybe we conquered the trial okay, but it is the residual bitterness, hurt and distaste that can cause us to throw in the towel.

Emotions are a huge part of being human. God created us to react to emotional stimuli. Jesus cried, too. But Jesus didn't allow himself to keep the negative attitude. At the very least, half of our battle is attitude. When you allow your heart to harbor all the foul things that have happened to you in the last 24 hours, it drags your spirit down and blocks the channels through which God is able to communicate with you. In the long run, it is simply not worth the time and energy to remain in a bad mood. Antidepressants are among the top selling drugs in the entire world. Why? Because we have allowed a bad hour to become a day, a week, a year, a lifetime.

Imagine the things I could have accomplished this morning had I not been moping. Sad isn't it? So the question today is a challenge to you and to me. We can sink into the bog of misery or fly high on the wings of anticipation.

Personally, I prefer to fly.
