Prayer to change a nation
By Jessica Allen

ORU students encircled the Praying Hands at 7 a.m. on Sept. 18 in honor of the 13th annual "See You at the Pole" prayer meeting. Every chaplain was present, as were Men's Chaplain Jose Miranda, Women's Chaplain Cindy Mills and about 30 students.

See You at the Pole (SYATP) was conducted by the Spiritual Life Dorm Directors (SLDDs), who led prayers for the nation, the University, students and their families. Praise and worship preceded and followed the prayer session.

SYATP, which began as a grassroots event for students, has become a national tradition. "Oh that you would burst from the heavens and come down," was this year's theme, based on Isaiah 64:1-2.

The National Network of Youth Ministries encourages students to get involved in SYATP through the website www.syatp.com, where they can receive all of the information they need to promote a successful SYATP event.

For several students, this year's event was somewhat different than their past experiences. Many did not even realize that ORU participated in SYATP.

"I thought it was just a high school thing," said sophomore Kara Dixon, who used to lead SYATP at her high school in North Carolina. "I loved it this year, but I think in high school it was more about taking a stand. It's different at a Christian university, where almost everyone has a genuine relationship with God."

Senior Charlita Awosika agreed. "This year had a different atmosphere than in the past... In high school I felt more involved, but I still enjoyed it."

Dixon was also glad to have been involved. "You could tell the people who came out really wanted to be there," she said. "And that is what made it so powerful."
