The Little Lighthouse
makes a big difference
By Lindy Spore
Someone once told
me, "There's no greater feeling than seeing a smile on the face
of a child." When you visit the children at The Little Lighthouse,
you will begin to see just how true this statement is.
The Little Lighthouse is a Christian, non-profit organization for
impaired and disabled children ranging from 4-10 years of age. The
groups of children are divided accordingly; the rooms named by the
colors of the rainbow (i.e., the "Yellow Room"), which adds to the
sense of love and joy that is present at the school. It is equipped
with teachers, a nurse and therapists who donate their time to these
precious kids...but there is need for more hands, like yours!
Rhonda Doubet, the leader of this amazing outreach, encourages more
students to get involved. "They really do need assistance because
two teachers cannot give that many kids the attention [that is]
needed," she said.
When asked about what the children are like, Doubet responded, "They
love touch. One little girl - she is so beautiful - she was born
without eyes, so she had glass eyes instead. I helped her eat by
guiding her hand to her mouth. There was another girl who would
not talk. So she would hold up cards with words on them. When we
gave her a Hershey's Hug, we all gave her one big hug, saying she
had asked for it!"
The faces of these children will capture your heart and keep you
coming back. The group meets in front of Security every Tuesday
and Thursday at 11 a.m. and returns at 1:30 p.m., a drive of about
20 minutes (Yale and 36th). It is always worth the time to show
the love of Jesus to a child. "It's such a blessing to see a child
smiling when you know they can't see you smiling back at them,"
Doubet said.
