Outreach opportunities
By Lindy Spore
The 2002 Community Outreach Rush Night is long gone, but the events
have only begun! With so many choices available, it can be exciting
and overwhelming at the same time. But, I assure you, there is hope
for those who have the desire.
This is where it all begins–your desire.
Some of you may assume that the weekends are not made for outreach
opportunities, but let me convince you otherwise. Do you think that
Saturdays were made for sleeping in? I challenge you to consider
giving up a couple of hours of sleep to change a life (or many lives)
by reaching out to others through one of the many weekend outreaches.
The quickly-growing Adopt-a-Block outreach serves the community
each Saturday morning. This outreach meets at 10:15 at Security,
and returns around 12:15. Along with a group of fellow students,
you will go from house to house, offering any kind of needed service,
from mowing a lawn for an elderly person to raking leaves, picking
up trash and so on.
The Colonial Manor Outreach leaves from ORU at 2 p.m. every Sunday
(meet in the Fishbowl at 1:45 for prayer) and returns by 3:45 p.m.
During this time, you will hang out with some great elderly folks
playing cards, singing, reading devotionals and praying. It is an
opportunity to reach out to those who are retired and just need
to see a bright, youthful face.
Another outreach is the “Doughnut Run.” Students meet
in Zoppelt at 10 a.m. on Sunday (returning at 12:30 p.m.) where
they meet the doughnut gang and drive to downtown Tulsa. Once there,
students walk through the streets handing out doughnuts to homeless
people. It is an amazing chance to get a better view of how life
is for some who are less fortunate.
Perhaps you are mobbed by schoolwork and you are simply unable to
attend any outreaches that require leaving campus. There is a simple
outreach that can be done right from your dorm room, called Prison
Pen Pals, geared toward people who are in prison and on death row.
You can change a life with just a letter a week to your pen pal.
Remember: the pen is mightier than the sword, and God’s Word
has power!
I know I have given gobs of information, and maybe not even enough.
However, more info is on its way. We will be featuring one or two
outreaches in every issue of the Oracle. I ask only that you will
take the time to pray about the outreaches available to you. For
information concerning these events and others, call the Community
Outreach Department at 495-7728. We are more than happy to direct
you to wherever your heart desires.
