Community Outreach: Reaching
Tulsa,
one person at a time
By Lindy Spore
Not too long ago,
in 1969, a group of young people came together with one dream. That
dream was to change the world...or at least their world in Tulsa,
Oklahoma, and to spread God's incredible love to people. It was
just an idea, but that idea would set the stage for a forever-altering
event that would not only endure for more than 30 years, but would
transform thousands of lives.
This was the beginning of the Community Outreach Department of Oral
Roberts University. This is the first article of many that will
divulge the experiences, testimonies, inspiring stories of "reaching
our city...one person at a time."
The tradition of relaying love and help to the neighborhoods of
this city has stood its ground, and now with fantastic leadership,
the department is better than ever. Jason Frederick, the Director
of the Community Outreach (CO) Department, is not only an outstanding
man of God, but also dedicated to the department and his staff of
students.
Jason emits a passion that ceaselessly uplifts those who work in
the department. "Our goal is to provide quality outreach opportunities
for the students of ORU and to encourage them to share the love
of Jesus through various outreaches," Frederick said.
The people who long to care for others, those who do not "work"
for the CO Department, but rather "shower their love" for the department,
are vital. The coordinators, outreach assistants and team-leaders
are heroes who work to the glory of Jesus Christ. Diligently each
one cares for this department.
On a daily basis, people call the CO Department for aide-from food
to outreach assistance, money donations to clothing. There are hundreds
in need, and these brothers and sisters are there to avail help,
even to answer the "simple" call for comfort and guidance.
Each person involved with Community Outreach is from a different
walk of life and each has various gifts. All praise for the efforts
of every person is offered directly to God, for it is by Him, through
Him, and all for Him that the ORU Community Outreach Department
survives. And so the dream continues to reach our city "…one person
at a time."
