Women's tennis gives to community
By Joe Brettell
The
Golden Eagle women's tennis team participated in a community outreach
in January, cleaning and assisting the Richbrit orphanage in Tulsa.
The team went to the orphanage as part of an effort to give back
to those in need in the Tulsa area. Richbrit was in danger of being
closed down before the efforts of the Golden Eagle women. The director
of Richbrit, having heard about the school's history of community
outreach, contacted women's tennis coach Linda Breckenridge and
asked for help.
"It was really rewarding, but also really sad because you realize
that these kids didn't choose this situation, it was chosen for
them,"sophomore Jen Helm said.
The Golden Eagle women did a variety of work for the children of
Richbrit. Senior Captain Claire Waltman prayed over each toy she
cleaned or repaired, sophomore Rachel Budd helped to paint and clean
the building. Others hung wallpaper, did yard work and performed
other odd jobs.
"I really realized how blessed I am today," Budd said. "I don't
think there was one of us that didn't leave here with a different
outlook."
Thanks to the work of the tennis team, Richbrit has been cleared
by the Department of Health Services and will remain open indefinitely.
