Music is the language of the heart
By Becky Castle
Name: Ruth Weaver
Classification: Senior
Major: Nursing (Missions Concentration)
Art: Violin
Hometown: Sarasota, Fla.
What was your childhood like?
I was born in Germany. German was my first language. When I was
three, my parents moved to Florida to raise their family. Job opportunities
were better and so were housing opportunities. I grew up in a wonderful
Christian family with wonderful Christian parents who have served
the Lord faithfully. I am very blessed. I think I had the happiest
childhood in the world.
How long have you been playing the violin?
About 13 years.
What made you start playing violin?
I had a friend who started playing in elementary school. Her mom
told my mom about her teacher and my mom asked me if I wanted to
play violin. I said, "Sure," and my sister and I started playing.
I was eight years old.
What motivates you to continue playing?
My love for music and opportunities to play with ... great musicians
in the Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra keep me motivated. I also get
to play at special events, such as weddings, banquets and other
social extravaganzas that can be exciting. I play on the worship
team at my church at home. I am also the first chair violinist with
the ORU orchestra.
Why are you a musician?
Even when I was young I wanted to be able to play a musical instrument.
I wanted to play the piano, but the opportunity to play the violin
arose before the opportunity to play piano. My mom agreed to let
me play the piano if I learned to play the violin!
Why do you think music is important as an art?
Music is a means of expression. I think that sometimes we can express
ourselves better with music than we can with words. It's the language
of the heart.
