Artist of the
Week: "Art exists everywhere"
By Rebecca Knowe
Name: Hao-Yiing Kuo
Classification: Senior
Hometown: Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio
Major: Broadcast Design and International Business
Art Form: Graphic Design
What is your nationality? Taiwanese
How did you come to the States?
A 747 Jumbo jet. My parents moved here when I was young. They immigrated-that
would be a better word.
Why do you enjoy graphic design?
I didn't [originally] want to be a graphic design major. My high
school art teacher believed in me. She said, "Your artwork is good."
[Graphic design] seems to be the industry to be in. I have the capability
to do some cool stuff.
How did your study trip to China last summer affect you and your
artwork?
It motivated me to get back into my own culture and country's styles
of art, such as calligraphy and the Asian style of painting. More
calligraphy than anything right now. You should see my studio; [the
calligraphy] is set up on a little box. It's just something I do
for fun right now. Most of my art has been graphic design.
What do you spend most of your time working on?
My portfolio right now, which consists of [art for] web, animation
and print.
How does being from another culture affect you and your art?
I can look at things bi-culturally instead of from a single culture.
This gives me a broader perspective and worldview, which could be
good or bad. The strength of being bi-cultural is you're not limited
to just one part of the world. You can appeal to more people, have
influence on more than one community.
Who is an instructor you look up to?
My favorite art teacher is Mr. [Nathan] Opp, because he teaches
with such a passion. He loves his students and he loves what he's
doing. I would like to some day create art with such a passion as
Mr. Opp.
What is the importance of art?
Art exists everywhere. To not know what is going on in your environment-your
space, what goes on around you-makes life almost purposeless.
What's a good saying you'd like to share?
"Opp for president!" No, let's go with a quote that somebody can
live by-"Life happens only once, so live." And close with, "The
senior art show is May 3."
