Daschle critiques
Bush administration's war on terrorism
By Sheldon Yoder
Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle recently criticized the Bush
administration's war on terrorism, saying there's "expansion without
at least a clear direction."
"Before we make commitments in resources, I think we need to have
a clear understanding of what the direction would be," Daschle said.
His opinion seems to be a "growing Democratic concern."
Daschle's comments were immediately assailed by Senate Minority
Leader Trent Lott, who said: "How dare Senator Daschle criticize
President Bush while we are fighting our war on terrorism, especially
when have troops in the field?"
"He should not be trying to divide our country while we are united,"
Lott said.
Daschle replied by saying the war has gone well so far, and he in
no way desires to "second guess" the President. However, he thinks
the administration needs to better state its goals before continuing
in its current direction.
Daschle's statement comes a day after Democrats criticized the Defense
Department's $379 billion budget request and what they claim to
be an "open-ended" war.
"I have said all along, we need to ask the tough questions. There
may be support in general for the President's request for defense,
but somebody's got to ask tough questions," said Daschle.
