Men's track team wins third straight
mid-con crown

Macomb, IL --Oral
Roberts and Southern Utah built on their first-day leads in the
2002-03 Mid-Continent Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships,
and took home the men's and women's titles, respectively. For Oral
Roberts, it was the team's third straight indoor crown and its fifth
in six seasons. Southern Utah's championship was its second in three
years and its third overall.
Mid-Con Men's Coach of the Year Joe Dial's Oral Roberts squad, which
held just a one-point lead after the first day of competition, extended
that advantage throughout the day Southern Utah (132.5) followed
in second place, while Western Illinois finished third (105.5).
Valparaiso (81), Chicago State (58) and UMKC (46) rounded out the
field.
Oral Roberts dominated the sprint events, which helped them to the
men's team title. Wayne Scott, who was named the Mid-Con Men's Indoor
Track and Field Athlete of the Year, won the 200 meter dash (22.34),
and also finished in the top four in four other events. The Golden
Eagles swept the top three spots in the 60 and 200 meter dashes;
Dwane Diah won the 60 meter dash (6.90).
Oral Roberts' Franz Petzold took home the 60 meter hurdles (8.12)
title for the second straight season, and was also a part of the
victorious 4x400 relay team, along with Prince Mumba, Ben Finkbeiner
and Richard Petzold, who was named the Newcomer of the Year. The
Golden Eagles also got event wins from Mike Joachimoski in the triple
jump (48'09.00") and Tony Snider in the shot put (54'00.50") on
the second day of competition. Shaun Schaefer had won the pole vault
(14'11.50") on the first day of the event.
Other event winners on the second day included Western Illinois'
Chad Stambaugh in the 400 meter dash (49.53), Southern Utah's Majeed
Abudu in the 800 meter run (1:54.44), Valparaiso's Nate Nunnelly
in the mile run (4:18.69), Southern Utah's Cody Moat in the 5000
meter run (15:06.89) and UMKC's Matt Voelker in the high jump (6'10.75").
Winners from the first day included Valparaiso's Aaron Crague in
the 3000 meter run (8:38.21), Chicago State's Jelani Summers in
the long jump (22'09.00"), Western Illinois' Robb Pfrank in the
weight throw (59'03.00"), and the team of Abudu, Steve Padilla,
David Sheeran and Aared Sampson for Southern Utah in the distance
medley (10:31.27).
Oral Roberts' Marsha Dawkins was named the Mid-Con Athlete of the
Year on the women's side after posting Mid-Con championship records
in the 60 meter dash (7.59) and the 400 meter dash (54.46). Teammate
Myka Green proved victorious in the triple jump (40'01.25") on the
second day of competition after winning the long jump (18'09.75")
on the first day.
