2002 SA campaign kicks off

2002 SA elections are nearly upon students. With three candidates squared off against each other for the position of President, as well as other contenders competing for executive positions in SA, the campaigns promise to be eventful.

General elections are Friday, Mar. 1, from 7a.m. to 7p.m. On-campus students will vote in the cafeteria and commuters will vote in the GC 3 pit area. Students are reminded to bring their ID.

Students may vote for all executive positions as well as the position of Senator for each student's respective dorm. A run-off will occur if one Presidential candidate does not net 40 percent of votes. The run-off will occur the following Monday, Mar. 4.

Meet the Candidates for President...

Alex Aguilar calls the city of San Antonio, Texas his home. He is currently a double major in Theological/Historical Studies and Spanish.

Alex has been in a position of leadership for two years in the Gamma Beta Phi honors society, serving as the service project coordinator. He has also served for two years as the director of the Spanish Ministry for the Community Outreach department. In the future, he plans on attending graduate school here at Oral Roberts University to obtain his Master's.

Alex desires to serve as a liaison between the students and administration. When asked to state his platform he said, "I want to be a voice for the students. I want them to know the officers of the Student Association and be familiar with each of them so that, should they have concerns, they will know whom to voice their concerns to."

Matthew Fenton is a 19 year-old sophomore from Ft. Worth, Texas. He is a Pre-Dental Biology Major who wishes to attend dental school after completing his tenure at ORU. His hobbies include music, playing the guitar and singing.

When asked why he wants to be the Student Association President, Fenton said, "I want to help and [provide] input for what happens on campus. I have the will and ideas to accomplish what needs to be done."

He is currently involved in the Student Association as a Senator for Michael Cardone.

Fenton plans to have a three-tier platform which includes communication between the students and administration, student involvement and working with commuters. He plans to promote student groups on campus, including clubs and Community Outreach, so more students will get involved. He also has a real desire to work with commuters and make them feel more a part of the student body.

Josh Andes hails from the town of Front Royal, Va., and is majoring in Graphic Design with an emphasis in Video.

Josh has gained experience in leadership by working with Fishnet Ministries and the yearly festival that Fishnet stages yearly. Last year Josh served as Associate Emcee, supervised Youth Rock House during the festival and served as a personal assistant to the president of the organization during the festival. He has also served as a leader in his youth group.

About his motivation for running, Josh said, "I want to listen to God, the students and the administration, find out what matters most to students and do my best - with prayer and humility, obedience to God and hard work - to make what the students care about happen."

However, Andes realizes that there is a fine-line between what students want and what can actually be done. He promises to work to accomplish whatever the students desire, but, "[Only] as long as what the students want does not conflict with the will of God or the standards at ORU. I can't promise the moon and deliver a telephone pole, but I'm going to do the best I can!"

For Executive VP...

Rebecca Benson
As Executive VP I will use my leadership skills to bring better organization to the SA offices and to work on any necessary revisions to the ORU constitution through the Senate and the student feedback. I will supervise the Public Relations committee to see that more events are advertised and will work closely with the VP of Grad and Commuter Affairs to insure that these students are not neglected.

Brent Stubbs
As Executive VP I will work hard to see that the views and opinions of the student body are presented to our administration. I will work hard to build a stronger "bridge" of communication between the students and the administration. I will surround myself with a staff that is culturally diverse and is dedicated to campus-wide cultural unity, to develop "spirit of diversity" that is essential for any university's success, especially one that carries the banner of Christ.

For VP of Finance...

Aaron Kesler
If elected, I would characterize my service with integrity and hard work. Secondly, I would bring a lot of energy to the position. I believe that this position should have someone in it that really wants to be there and is excited about the position. Finally, I would like to improve school pride by providing funding to events students truly enjoy.

Justin Woodard
As VP of Finance my primary goal would be to perform the duties pertinent to the budget in a timely and efficient manner. While I cannot increase the amount of funds that the administration allows SA to use, I will do my very best to allocate the greatest amount of funds to the services and goods that the student body, in conjunction with the executive officers and administration, deem important.

For VP of Services...

Jamie Ausdemore
If I am elected VP of Student Services, I will work with students to provide satisfying dining services. Also involved with the position is the arranging of summer storage and shuttles for breaks, which I desire to make more efficient. I am looking forward to serving the student body in any way I know how.

Josh Showman

As VP of Student Services I will use my previous SA experience to help strengthen and improve the Student Association as well as improve the services provided by it. Some areas I desire to improve are shuttle service, luggage carts, summer storage, food service, change machines and TV channel selection. Above all I will do my best to insure efficient and professional service.

VP of Graduate and Commuter Affairs is uncontested. The position of VP of Activities has no current candidate and will be appointed by the elected President.
