Ethnic
tension still a problem
Less than two months after representatives of the various ethnic groups
in Afghanistan signed a power-sharing accord in Bonn, Germany, tensions
in Afghanistan have erupted. The agreement was hoped to quell these
problems and lead to a more stable government in Afghanistan.
Syed Hamid Gailani, the head of the Peshawar Process delegation at
the Bonn conference, was heading a convoy in eastern Afghanistan to
build support for the new government and unite the divisive Pashtuns
who are currently split into three factions. The governor of Greater
Paktia, Bahca Kahn, says Gailani has challenged his authority.
Khan ordered Gailani to leave the region or run the risk of capture.
Tribal leader Sulayman Zai offered to stand between the two forces
as a buffer. In spite of this, fighting erupted between residents
and troops deployed around the perimeter of the town where Gailani
was staying. |
