CC
goes out with a bang?
By Sarah Beirute
On Friday, Feb. 8 the Classroom Center proved she was built to last.
The scheduled explosives charge took her down but not out, requiring
Ark Wrecking Inc. to manually weaken her structure with construction
vehicles.
The Classroom Center has been a part of ORU since it began. Students
attending the University now remember it for its leaky ceilings, narrow
hallways and odd-shaped rooms. This was not always the case, however.
The
Classroom Center was originally called the Health Resources Center.
This building was able to accommodate 3000 people for basketball games
and contained an exercise room, infirmary and Olympic-size pool. When
the Aerobic Center was built in 1974, the HRC was converted so that
other departments and classrooms could be housed in it.
Coach Bernis Duke of the Athletics Department has been at ORU since
it began and remembers the Health Resource Center fondly. "The
thing about that building that you don't see is the spirit it had
that first year. Everyone was excited to have a team of our own in
basketball, a new school . . . it was a really exciting time."
Despite the fond memories Coach Duke has of the building, he knows
that its time has come to an end. "For me it kind of spans my
career . . . that I have been here the same amount of time it has
. . . and now I have retired . . . so I guess we came in together
and go out together." |
