Sharon wishes Arafat "liquidated"

Israel Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said recently that he regrets not having killed Yasser Arafat. Arafat is the Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. Sharon made the comments in an interview that was published in the Israeli paper Maariv.

Sharon was Israel's Defense Minister in 1982 when Israel invaded Lebanon to dislodge PLO forces from that country. The operation was intended to target guerrilla bases along Israel's northern border, but Sharon pushed into Beirut, driving out the PLO. Arafat was purposely not targeted.

Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Pique, President of the European Union, criticized Sharon's remarks about Arafat saying that they "warranted rejection."
