Student takes Mss Oklahoma
By Tia Peterson

On Dec. 8, Star Williams, a senior at Oral Roberts University, was crowned Miss Oklahoma USA 2003. She is majoring in Organizational/Interpersonal Communications and pursuing a minor in Business Administration.

Williams served as Miss Tulsa USA and went on to the state pageant to earn her title as Miss Oklahoma USA. Her platform, which stems from her desire to be a motivational speaker, is teen violence prevention.

Williams said that she plans to speak to youth and adults alike, "helping people tap into their talents." She believes that if teens can discover what their gifts are, they will spend more time developing them and will eventually become better people.

Williams is vice president of Life Enrichment Consulting, a family-run business that consults non-profit organizations in writing grants and proposals, as well as forecasting and other business-building tasks.

This was Williams' second attempt at Miss Oklahoma USA; last year she was first runner-up. She was also Miss Black Oklahoma and first runner-up to the Miss Black International title.

At the Miss Oklahoma USA pageant at Westmoore High School in Norman, Okla., Williams was voted "Miss Congeniality" by the other contestants and was also the "Evening Gown Award Winner."

Williams grew up in Tulsa, where she attended Jenks High School through her sophomore year. She has traveled extensively and lived in England, where she was home-schooled during her junior and senior years, graduating in 1998.

"Tulsa's my home; I've spent most of my life here," Williams said. She is the daughter of William Brewer and Gwen Williams.

"Star exhibits excellence in school work as well as interpersonal relationships," said Dr. Wendy Shirk of the Communication Arts Department. "She has a quiet, godly confidence and knows who she is in Christ."

The Miss USA pageant will be held March 24 in San Antonio this year. It will air on NBC. Six contestants will also be featured on Fear Factor an hour before the pageant begins, and Williams hopes to be one of them.
