Flying Free

I stare at the bird cage across the room,
thinking how I must set him free soon.
worrying, wondering, will he be all right?
Hating to have him out of my sight.

My attention switches to the window,
illuminated by the sunlight's glow;
and also to the other birds flying free,
looking at where he will eventually be.

I picture myself opening the cage door,
urging my precious pet to soar.
This vision rouses so much fear;
I walk over to the cage just to be near.

I listen to him sing, one last time.
Knowing the big wall I have to climb.
I take him out, having done my best,
it is up to him to do all the rest.

Tears in my eyes, I make a silent plea
for his safety and then I set him free.
