i will learn french... you just watch me...

when i was in ninth grade, stumbling through the halls, having panic attacks, compulsivly fixing my hair and makeup in the bathrooms during passing period, scared shitless that i was going to be beat up or get lost, i decided to take spanish. i lived in this crappy little town in the middle of nowhere, colorado, (don't ask me why i thought i would get lost in a small school), and they weren't offering any other classes except spanish. since you had to have at least two years of foreign language, "chose" wasn't a really good word...

anyways... i moved to portland sophmore year, and i had a choice of taking french or spanish. two whole choices. wa-chow. i chose french.

kendra tries to translate simone d'beauvoir...

this was my first big project. wait... i lied. my second. my first was to translate some of Maya Angelou into french, but that was for a final. this, i decided to do on my own. i wanted to translate the second sex from french to english, but i only got about a page done. i guess that's pretty good, considering i had only taken a year of french, and that most of that was pretty damn close to the real translation, but still... i think i "put to much on my plate." i really wanted to see if this would help me learn more, which it did. i learned that le mot means "the word." that's something... and i believe that simone de beauvoir means "simone of beautiful sight" or "simone of beautiful seeing" or "simone sees beautifully"... something like that. something about "to see" and "beautiful" in relation to "simone."

next, it was le petit prince...

so, when i decided that was too hard, i decided to wuss out and read le petit prince. sigh... i'm doing good, though. i'm on chapter three, which, considering i'm a very busy girl, is pretty damn good.

i think this is becoming somewhat of an obsession...

yeah... lately, i've taken to compulsivly trying to translate ani quotes whenever i'm bored. i'm not really sure how i feel about this. i mean, i'm more likely than not totally screwing up the quote-the> context- and making the french absolutly terrible (and that doesn't even take into consideration my pronunciation...) so i feel compelled to just quit it for the sake of not feeling like a total fool. but nobody reads it but me, right? i don't know.

or, i could just watch monty python and the flying circus. they have a whole skit in french. two crazy frenchmen are explaining this sheep-helicopter-airoplane thingy. really funny.

pause... i sense this website is quickly turning into a live journal. i've never really had one of those... maybe i should try my hand at a little french....

handy dandy frenchy phrase...ies...

"bonjour! Ça va?" Hello! how are you?

"parlez-vous francaise?" do you speak french?

"je parle un peu francaise." i speak a little french.

"comment t'appelles-tu?" what do you call yourself?

"Mon nom est Kendra." my name is kendra

"puis-je aller au toilette, s'il vous plait?" can i go to the bathroom?

"dessine-moi un mouton!" draw me a sheep!(i learned this phrase from le petit prince!)
