LauraBelle's Countdown to Las Vegas

This all started one Sunday night in December when my good pal and Summer Sister, Stefanie, called to say she was engaged and getting married to the love of her life, Jim. She told me the plans were to go to Las Vegas and get married in an Elvis Chapel. She was hoping I could be there. This excited me to pieces, mainly because I couldn't miss the opportunity to say, "I told you so!"

Stefanie and I became instant friends one day in a Creative Writing class our Junior year of High School. This was born out of a discussion of a Thesaurus. We went through a lot together the next three years. We still have phrases we bring up to each other, just to crack each other up, like Copacabana, checkered tablecloth shirt, Remember me?, typhoons, etc. Our English Lit. teacher in Senior year referred to us as Damon and Pythias, the famous mythological friends.

Sadly in college we began to go our separate ways. But we did keep in contact with each other occasionally, and every time we talked, it was if time had stopped. Those years seemed to magically disappear, and we seemed to be back in that Creative Writing class.

The good news for Stef, was that she met another person around this time that was to become her lifelong friend, Jim. The first time I met him the three of us were standing in front of the bulletin board in college. I knew then that these two were meant for something more than a lifelong friendship. I used every opportunity that I had to let Stef know this, but she always insisted they were just "buds."

The following years brought Stef and Jim to both marry different people. A few years ago at Christmas Stef was divorcing her husband, and decided to send Jim and I Christmas cards to let us know about this big change in her life. Unbeknownst to her, similar changes were going on in Jim's life. After receiving her card, Jim called to confirm her news, and to let her know he was also divorcing his wife. Fate.

That's right; fate. What more could this be? That could not be a coincidence! So here we are in 2001, a good seventeen years after I originally told her they belonged together. And I will be joining them in Las Vegas to see fate finally unite them til death do them part. And when everyone is offering congratulations after the ceremony, I will be there grinning, saying, "I told you so."
