Leaving JFK airport

So how do two girls fit everything they need to wear for three months in two pieces of luggage and a carry-on? Very carefully. The US now has the tightest security of anywhere in the world. Making packing a real drag.

We got our plane tickets on Student Universe, which is the best place for students and faculty to find cheap fares. Since you can only buy tickets for yourself, and both of us were in different states when they went to buy them, we ended up getting tickets that left 12 hours apart. Fortunately, Sarah had the presence of mind to get her ticket changed to match Rachel's, which means we got to fly together, something which Sarah continuously hangs over Rachel's head.

So how many knives can a person really sneak through security? A lot. We were planning on checking our carry-on luggage underneath, so we didn't have to cart them around with us. And the nice person at the British Airways phone center said we could do that. We go to check in for our flight at JFK and the guy at the desk is like, you can't put those underneath. So we're like, what a drag, but whatever. So we go, get on our plane, and head to London. At London, we're going through security to make our connecting flight and Sarah's carry-on beeps. They security guy opens it up, and pulls out the Swiss Army knife that Sarah thought was going to be safely stowed away under the plane, then forgot about. The security guy is like:

"You got through security at JFK with this thing?"

And Sarah said: "Yes." So the security guard laughed a lot, told his friends there, who also laughed a lot, then confiscated the knife.

It wasn't a real Swiss Army knife. But Sarah was still sad.
