“Tomorrow’s Promise”

Chapter 6

Brian worriedly paced around the living room, waiting for the phone to ring or the front door to open. It had been four hours since Rebecca left and he hadn’t heard anything from anyone. Gina usually would have called and bitched at him or she would have come home by now. He picked up the phone and called Gina.
"Hi. The little midget strip club. This is Gina how may I help you?”
"Gina, is Rebecca there?" he asked.
"Oh hey Brian," she said then put the phone down for a second, "Jerk!" she said then picked it back up, "Uh, no not yet but she's supposed to be coming… Wow, about four hours ago.”
“Damnit, you mean she's not with you?"
"Do not damn Kevin's thing! It's small enough! No... I just thought she might have gone to the store or something. She was going to sleep here, away from you. You know anywhere she might be?"
"No, Gina I'm worried. This isn't like her, she wouldn't just disappear."
"Did you call Lauren or Nick? She could have, I dunno, stopped there."
"I know she wouldn't go there, she always comes to you. Besides Nick would have called me if she was there, or she would have come back by now."
"Okay, now I'm getting worried. Brian, how can you lose your girlfriend?! That's like losing your baby in a super market." She got quiet, "You think I should call the police?"
"I... I don't know! Oh hold on someone's at the front door."
Brian sat the phone down and opened the door to a police officer. “Are you Mr. Brian Littrell?”
“Yes.”
“I’m Officer Johnson. I’m here concerning a Miss Rebecca Thompson. She was involved in a car accident and she in now in the hospital. Are you family?”
“No… she’s my girlfriend… is she ok? What happened?”
“She was hit at an intersection. A car on the other side of the intersection swerved into her lane and they hit head on. The car that was behind her didn’t have time to stop and he hit her, and she was also hit on the right side. She has been unconscious, but other than that I don’t know her health status.”
Brian felt like he had just been repeatedly punched in the stomach. He was shaky and his eyes stung with tears. Gina’s voice suddenly became heard from the phone, “BRIAN! What in the hell is going on!?!”
He picked up the phone, “I gotta call you back.”
“Don’t you dare hang up on…” click.
Brian went to pick up his keys but his hands were shaking so badly that he couldn’t get a grip on them. He started to breakdown, but controlled it as much as he could since the policeman was still there. He offered to give Brian a rid to the hospital since he was in no shape to drive, and he accepted.
