“Tomorrow’s Promise”

Chapter 2

The party died down and by ten everyone had left, some sober and some drunk. Brian and Rebecca cleaned up after everyone left. The fight had been long forgotten, but Rebecca had a gut feeling that it wasn’t going to be the last. When they finished cleaning Brian sat her down on the couch, and just started spilling out everything that was going on in his head.
“Bec, we have gone through A LOT together this past year. I mean, from the moment we met our relationship has been… I don’t know… dramatic, hectic, intense, to throw out some words. Then with the new album and the tour, that just put more weight on our shoulders, but we made it through that. I know these last couple months have been the hardest with all of the fighting we’ve been doing, and I am so sorry about all of that. But the one thing that has never changed no matter what, is how I feel about you. I love you more than anything else, and I have from the very beginning, and I will until the very end.” He stopped for a moment to recollect his thoughts. Rebecca just watched him with tears in her eyes when he started again. “I could sit here for hours telling you how much I love you and telling you how beautiful you are but I’m not going to because in my heart, I know that you know. I’m hoping that you know, at least, and today was the perfect day to just let it all out. And this is where my gift for you comes in.” He pulled a small green velvet box out of his pocket and opened it. A small diamond in the shape of a heart sat upon the top of the white gold band. The inscription, "I promise you my heart and soul" was delicately etched into the inside band. Nothing real fancy stood out, just a simple ring that showed Brian's love for her.
“Brian it’s beautiful. Thank you so much, but you didn’t have to do this,” she said as he slid the ring onto her finger.
“I know I didn’t have to do it, but I wanted to,” he said giving her a passionate kiss. “Come on, dance with me.” He took her hand, walked over to the stereo and turned it on, and soft romantic music filled the room. Brian McKnight’s song “Back At One” soon came on and Brian sang along quietly in her ear. It wasn’t until the second when the words hit them.

It’s so incredible
The way things work themselves out
And all emotional
Once you know what it’s all about, hey
And undesirable for us to be apart
I never would have made it very far
‘Cause you know you got the keys to my heart

One, you’re like a dream come true
Two, just wanna be with you
Three, girl it’s plain to see that you’re the only one for me
Four, repeat steps one through three
Five, may you fall in love with me
If ever I believe my work is done
Then I’ll start back at one

Say farewell to the dark of night
I see the coming of the sun
I feel like a little child whose life has just begun
You came and breathed new life
Into this lonely heart of mine
You threw out the lifeline
Just in the nick of time

One, you’re like a dream come true
Two, just wanna be with you
Three, girl it’s plain to see that you’re the only one for me
Four, repeat steps one through three
Five, may you fall in love with me
If ever I believe my work is done
Then I’ll start back at one
